Form & Function
Expression of Truth & Beauty

The purpose behind this project is to expand on the relationship between form and function. In this project, we try and assimilate a moving object into an already existing bridge design. We studied how these movements worked and used that movement to transform the structure of our bridges. It was required that these transformations allowed for water traffic to pass through a 30' x 40' opening.

Movement Analogies

The movement of these objects is intended to act as a means for opening the roadbed for boats to pass through a 30' x 40' gap.

Preliminary Design

I decided to use the lawn chair as my movement inspiration. To start off my design process, I first began with raising the left half of the truss bridge high enough to allow the 30' x 40' box to sit on the roadbed. At first, it was very difficult to come up with a desired movement. Ultimately, I decided to put my mechanism on a track with rollers and attach pulleys at certain points to allow for the movement to be elongated in one section, and shortened in another. The up and down movement on the track allows for the opening.

This proves that the bridges form is directly affected by achieving a certain desired function.
